Sacramento Kings Vs. Memphis Grizzlies

  • The last time we saw the Memphis Grizzlies play the Sacramento Kings on January 2nd, Memphis blew a 20 point lead in Sacramento in route to what was one of the worst losses of the season. The Grizzlies and Kings were both 13-22 at the time, in a game that looked to be a battle between fellow cellar dwellers.
This was a battle between De’Aaron Fox and Ja Morant, giving a little insight to the rematch Thursday night that will likely provide more of the same when the two star guards face off again.
The Grizzlies stars played well, with Ja notching 23 points and 7 assists, while Jaren had 18 points to go along with 7 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield combined for 53 points, sparking the Kings to a huge comeback victory.
Since that game was played, the Grizzlies are 15-4 and have been without a doubt playing the best basketball Memphis has seen over the last couple of seasons. Will the Grizzlies be able to overcome mental hurdles this time around and get revenge on the Kings? Here are the storylines ahead of the homestretch of the regular season.

Next: No. 3

3. The battle of Ja Morant and De’Aaron Fox
The marquee matchup of the night as it has been in the first two meetings of the season will be the battle of two of the best young guards in the league in Morant and Fox. De’Aaron had a great game the last time out, but so did Ja, and Morant has only improved as the season has gone along.
Fox is averaging 20 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 7 assists a game, and has generally been the catalyst for a Kings offense that likes to put up points in droves, especially in the backcourt. Meanwhile, Morant comes in averaging 17.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game, and has continued to blossom into a superstar role, along with frontrunner status for the NBA’s ROTY award.
Ja was able to score the last time out, as did Fox, and it will be interesting to see who will get the upper-hand on the defensive end of the court in the rematch. Ja has shown himself capable on the defensive end but inconsistent, and it is the same story in Sacramento. With both players being elite scorers in their own right, the story could come down to which of the two guards can make more stops on the other end.

Next: No. 2

Photo by Joe Murphy/NBAE via Getty Images

2. Bench Scoring in Droves
A key storyline that has developed out of Sacramento since the last meeting between the two teams has been the benching of Buddy Hield, and his subsequent renaissance. While the Grizzlies certainly have options of their own, with guys like Brandon Clarke, De’Anthony Melton, and even Gorgui Dieng who has impressed since his acquisition from the Timberwolves.
Outside of the now reigning 3 point champion and lights out shooter in Hield, the Kings also have the likes of Kent Bazemore and Harry Giles who they can turn to off the bench for solid scoring. Sacramento and Memphis rank 5th and 16th respectively in bench scoring, and both teams have relied on their benches quite a bit throughout the season.
The key here for the Grizzlies is obviously slowing down Buddy Hield, but also getting defensive production out of their front-court guys coming off of the bench, where Memphis has seen heavy minutes being dished out quite often due to JJJ’s inability at times to stay on the court.
If Memphis gets another big night from Brandon Clarke off the bench as they did against the Trail Blazers, and the Grizzlies can contain a very capable duo in Bazemore and Hield, a win becomes much more manageable, and will be a key talking point after this game is said and done.

Next: No. 1

1. The Homestretch of the Season, Playoff Time
It is no secret that the Grizzlies find themselves in poll position for a playoff berth, and the beginning of clinching that 8th seed begins tonight in Sacramento.
The Grizzlies sit in firm control after beating Portland before the break, 4 games ahead in the race for the playoffs. With the toughest remaining schedule in the Western Conference, and Portland and New Orleans laying claim to the two easiest schedules, games like these might be considered must wins. A Sacramento team that is all but on life support for a playoff bid is prime picking for a Memphis team that will have to grind for every win down the stretch.
It most likely comes down to one thing for Memphis, is the last 19 games a flash in the pan or a sign of things to come? It is hard to believe the former, as the Grizzlies young stars have evolved before everyone’s eyes, and done so in superstar fashion. A high caliber matchup against the Lakers in the first round is trial by fire to say the least, but that series would be extremely fun, and one that the Grizzlies could use to further catapult themselves into the national spotlight.

Next: The Grizzlies will be in every All-Star event next year

But for now, the road to the postseason begins in Sacramento, and don’t think for a second the Grizzlies have forgotten about the collapse in the last meeting. A win is just what the doctor ordered to kickstart a playoff berth, and the young Grizz have all the momentum they need.
classic
https://bealestreetbears.com/2020/02/17/why-the-memphis-grizzlies-will-have-an-all-star-in-every-event-next-year/
https://bealestreetbears.com/2020/02/20/memphis-grizzlies-five-most-important-series-post-all-star-break/
;(function ($) $(document).ready(function () try tpsInstance = new tps.createSlideshow(tpsOptions); catch(e) );(jQuery)); (function () // create the elements and set all attributes:var conversationScript = document.createElement('script');conversationScript.setAttribute('async', 'true');conversationScript.setAttribute('src', ' _ZOYLBZNP');conversationScript.setAttribute('data-spotim-module', 'spotim-launcher');conversationScript.setAttribute('data-post-url', ' -preview-sacramento-kings-vs-memphis-grizzlies/');conversationScript.setAttribute('data-post-id', '59703');conversationScript.setAttribute('data-spotim-multi-instance', true);conversationScript.setAttribute('data-article-tags', 'memphis grizzlies');conversationScript.setAttribute('data-disqus-url', ' -preview-sacramento-kings-vs-memphis-grizzlies/#!');conversationScript.setAttribute('data-disqus-identifier', '59703 =59703');// append the elements to the container:var container = document.querySelector('#comments-wrapper-59703');container.appendChild(conversationScript);)(); Top StoriesBeale Street Bears 3 yearsWhy the Memphis Grizzlies will have an All-Star in every event next year
